Most people aren’t born with perfectly straight teeth, making it difficult to feel confident about their smile. Orthodontics are specifically designed to create the beautiful smile you’ve always dreamed of. When you have teeth you can feel proud to show off, you’ll have a reason to smile.

Why Orthodontics?

Procedures Available with Orthodontics

Your first trip to the orthodontist will involve a thorough consultation, examination and set of x-rays. This will give the specialist an idea of what procedures will work the best for you. While brace placement is the most common orthodontic procedure, there are many other appliances that you might benefit from. Tooth-Friendly Recipe 10: Green Vanilla Mint Smoothie

vanilla mint smoothie

A smoothie is often a treat that many people like to enjoy in the summer, but there is a tooth friendly recipe that you can enjoy at any time that includes vanilla and mint. The green vanilla mint smoothie isn’t as sweet as some others that you can make, decreasing the amount of sugar that sits on the teeth. If there isn’t as much sugar on the teeth, then there is a reduced risk of cavities developing. It can also help to prevent the deterioration of the enamel. There are a few ingredients in this delicious smoothie that you might not think would be in it, but they give the smoothie its green appearance.

Ingredients

  • One frozen banana
  • 3/4 cup of coconut milk
  • 1 and 1/2 cups of spinach
  • About 10 mint leaves, more if you like the flavor of mint
  • One teaspoon of vanilla extract

Combine all of the ingredients in a blender like you would if you were making a milkshake. You can add a bit of dark chocolate if you’re looking for a sweeter taste. A bit of cucumber and lemon juice can also be added if you’re looking for a way to add more vegetables to the smoothie.

This is a smoothie that can be enjoyed in the morning so that you have the energy to get through the day. It’s also an ideal treat for the middle of the day if you need to replenish energy that you have lost while working or going to school. It’s an option for children who seem to have trouble eating vegetables as they won’t be able to taste the spinach since there is mint and bananas in the smoothie. After pouring the smoothie into a glass, you can add a mint leaf for a garnish.

Tooth-Friendly Recipe 9: Fruit Kabobs

fruit kabobs

Is Fresh Fruit Good For You?

Although you might be worried about whether the acidity of fresh fruit might damage your family’s teeth, you should know that the benefits of eating fruit far outweigh any risks. First of all, the sugar in fresh fruit is less damaging to teeth than the sugars in fruit-flavored candy or other sugary treats. Fresh fruit is also better for your teeth than dried fruit since sticky dried fruit can often stick to the surface of the teeth, causing problems with decay.

While most fruit is fine for your teeth and helps to provide vital nutrients to your entire body, some fruits are more acidic than others and can, if eaten in large amounts, cause some erosion of the enamel. While some fruits that are high in acid might seem obvious (like limes and lemons), others (like apples) might surprise you. Blue plumbs, grapes, pomegranates, blueberries, pineapples, peaches, mangos, and oranges are all very acidic. This does not mean, however, that you need to give up these nutritious fruits entirely.

Ways To Prevent Acid Erosion

You can opt for low-acid fruits as a snack or ingredient whenever possible. In fact, this recipe for fruit kabobs is made of melon, which are low-acidic fruits, making it an ideal tooth friendly recipe.

Melon Kabobs For Healthy Smiles

Ingredients:

1 Cantaloupe
1 Watermelon
1 Honeydew Melon

Using a melon baller, scoop out the flesh of your cantaloupe, watermelon, and honeydew melon into equal-sized balls. Alternate the three types of melons and serve on skewers. Melon tastes best when cold, so keep your tray of fruit kabobs in the refrigerator until right before serving. If members of your family are not melon fans, you could also serve kabobs with blackberries, bananas, and kiwi instead.

If you are concerned about enamel erosion or any other dental issue, please contact us at Beecroft Orthodontics.

Tooth-Friendly Recipe 8: Apple-Raisin Salad

apple raisin salad

Sometimes, you might have a craving for something sweet, but you need to think about your teeth in the process. You don’t want a lot of sugar in the foods that you eat as it will settle on the teeth, deteriorating the enamel and causing cavities to develop. A delicious tooth friendly recipe that can be altered depending on the flavors that you enjoy is an apple-raisin salad. This healthy salad isn’t like a traditional dish that includes lettuce and vegetables. It includes fruits, yogurt and nuts that are ideal for the spring and summer. You can add a few spices for a winter treat.

The first thing that you need to do when preparing this salad is to cut five apples into cubes after the seeds are removed. You can use any kind of apple that you enjoy, but red apples work best for the sweet flavors that you desire.

Combine the following ingredients in a bowl:

  • 1/2 cup of chopped nuts
  • 1/2 cup of raisins
  • 1/2 cup of celery that has been chopped

Walnuts work best in this recipe. You could use pecans but make sure that they are chopped into small pieces. If you don’t like celery, you can replace it by putting the salad mixture on a bed of lettuce. To give a creamy component, combine 1/2 cup of mayonnaise as well as a teaspoon of lemon juice. Yogurt also works well, and you don’t need to add the lemon juice if you don’t want a lot of acidity. Whether you use mayonnaise or yogurt, you want to have enough that will coat the apples and the raisins so that the salad isn’t dry. Apples can be left in slices if you want to have a small bowl on the side with yogurt to dip them into.

Tooth-Friendly Recipe 7: Black Bean Rice Burgers

black bean rice burger

If you are a mom, you probably already know the importance of keeping your family’s teeth clean by brushing twice a day. However, you might not be aware that the food you cook can also impact your family’s dental health. Certain foods are better for your teeth than others. Here is a tooth friendly recipe you can add to your family’s meal plan. These black bean rice burgers are great tasting and can help keep your family’s smiles bright.

This meal comes together quickly, and is easy enough to make on a weeknight. Because brown rice is less processed, it is better for your teeth than white rice. White rice is higher in simple carbohydrates, and can stick to your teeth. This can lead to dental decay. This is why we recommend using brown rice in this recipe for rice burgers. You can cook the rice in advance to save even more time.

Ingredients

1⁄2 cup brown rice, uncooked.
1 can black beans (15 oz).
1 yellow onion
1 clove of garlic
1 cup corn
1 teaspoon of salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1⁄3 teaspoon chili powder
1 egg
1⁄3 cup panko breadcrumbs
Olive oil for cooking

Cook your brown rice according to the package directions. While the rice cooks, dice your onion and garlic. Sauté the onion and garlic until soft, then add the corn and spices until heated through. Mash the black beans into a paste. Combine the beans, onion and corn mixture, egg, and panko style bread crumbs, mixing thoroughly. Form into six patties, and sauté in a skillet for 3-5 minutes per side or until the patties begin to turn brown. Serve with buns and your family’s favorite veggies.

Of course, while eating right can help keep your teeth healthy, you still need regular dental examinations. At Beecroft Orthodontics, you are more than a patient. You are family. Please contact Beecroft Orthodontics to schedule an appointment to discuss any of our treatments. We have offices located in Fredericksburg, North Stafford and King George, and we would love to welcome you.
