Fredericksburg is a small city with a rich history. Located around 47 miles south of Washington, D.C., Fredericksburg belongs to the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan area. The city is home to four Civil War battlefields, as well as a number of fascinating museums and historic sites.
Before European settlement, the Fredericksburg area was inhabited by the Manahoac tribe. English settlers began forming colonies around the Rappahannock River in the 17th century, but the city of Fredericksburg wasn’t officially founded until 1727. It was named after Frederick, the Prince of Wales.
During the Civil War, the city became an important site to both armies because of its location between Washington and the Confederate capital of Richmond. The Battle of Fredericksburg, which was fought in 1862, was one of the largest in the Civil War. Part of the town was destroyed during the fighting. The Second Battle of Fredericksburg was waged in 1863, and other battles took place nearby in the Spotsylvania County area.

Fredericksburg is a popular destination for travelers interested in Civil War history. The Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania National Military Park is made up of the Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House battlefields. The park offers tours during the summer months which are a draw for visitors and area residents.
The city’s most famous historical residents are undoubtedly George Washington and his family members. Washington spent his boyhood years at nearby Ferry Farm, which is now open to visitors. Another notable landmark in town is the Mary Washington House, where George Washington’s mother lived for the last seventeen years of her life.
Fredericksburg has a historical district that spans forty blocks. Many of the buildings in this area date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The Fredericksburg Area Museum displays exhibits relating to the regions history from colonial times to the present. Located in a historically preserved building, the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop showcases medical treatments from the colonial era.
Founded in 1908, The University of Mary Washington is regarded as on of the best public, four-year colleges in south. Around 4,000 students are enrolled in the university, and the school offers a wide variety of liberal arts and science programs. UMW has 20 sports teams that participate in the NCAA’s Division III. Much of the 176-acre campus is located on Marye’s Heights, an area that played a key role in the Battle of Fredericksburg.
Fredericksburg is home to a number of medical centers and dental practices that take care of patients of all ages.
